Peggy Czyl paintings that reveal elusive color

I thought it would be interesting to document the stages of a painting. During the process of creating the oil painting "Oak Winds Marina", I took pictures of the work in progress. Some photos were taken at the end of a day, and some were taken after the course of several days. Below are the photographs following the progress of this piece.

I started by toning the canvas overall with a bright orange. Then I sketched the basic forms and structures onto the orange canvas. The next step was to block in the dark and shadow areas with a deeper color. Here I used a purple. My intent for using the bright orange was to allow some of the color to remain on the finished piece - in small, selected areas. This helps to unify the painting and helps brighten the other colors.

Here, I refined the dark values, especially behind the boats and in the hull and shadow of the blue boat. I did not want the clubhouse in the background to take away visual interest from the boats, so I darkened the clubhouse a bit, which helps it to blend in more with the background.

..........................................
At this point, I decided to put in the body of the boats, using variations of white. There are many, many different colors in white.

More detail was added to the boats, including the boat canopies and the windows of the boats on the left. I also added a little more detail to the water.

..........................................
In the final painting, I've gone through and added various small changes throughout the painting. Some of these changes include brightening up some of the water in the foreground, altering some of the color and shadows of the hill behind the boats, and working a little more on the trees.
